A San Diego man has been sentenced to 20 years to life in prison for killing professional surfer Emery Kauanui.
Defendant Seth Cravens made a brief statement during sentencing Monday, apologizing to the victim's family and his own family.
"I do pray that you find some kind of peace and comfort. I'm sorry for my own family ... everybody that had to go through this with me. I'm really sorry," he said.
Cravens was convicted of second-degree murder for killing Kauanui with a single punch to the head during a scuffle on May 24, 2007.
Raised in Kauai, Hawaii, and nicknamed the "Flying Hawaiian," Kauanui was a fixture at San Diego's Windansea Beach. His death rocked the seaside community of La Jolla.
Cravens and four friends were all initially charged with murder, but the other four pleaded guilty to lesser charges. Cravens was also convicted of an unrelated assault.
