A New Jersey man says he takes online threats seriously — and that's why he called police when he realized a California teen he was chatting with was suicidal.

Sacramento police said Wednesday that the 18-year-old had decided not to kill himself by the time authorities reached him. But they say 21-year-old Jesse Coltrane of Camden did the right thing.

Coltrane says he never met the teen in person but got an instant message from him Monday that mentioned suicide.

That led to hours of chatting on the phone, over webcams and through instant messages. Coltrane called authorities after the California man hung up the phone and shut down his computer.

Authorities got medical attention for the teen after arriving.
