‘Ice jam’: Snow plows clear hail in Texas

Residents in West Texas were walloped by waves of strong storms Thursday.

Stretches of Interstate 27 in the Panhandle were temporarily closed because of high water. Winds also downed power lines in Howard County.

Firefighters in the small town of Tulia had to rescue people from stranded cars.

Crews even pulled out snow plows and road graders after the first wave of storms pounded the town with hail that blocked culverts and backed up the water on I-27. "It was just like an ice jam," a Tulia police dispatcher said.

Storm spotters reported tornadoes but there was no immediate word on damage.

More showers and thunderstorms were expected Friday in the Lubbock and Amarillo areas.
