The Montgolfier brothers made the animals the first-ever balloon passengers in 1783. The 8-minute flight over France was fueled by hot air, but it wasn’t heated by propane as it is today. The Montgolfiers attached a fire pit to the balloon and burned straw, manure and other material to get the contraption off the ground.
