A strong earthquake measuring a magnitude off 6.9 struck in the middle of Mexico's Gulf of California Monday, U.S. seismologists reported.
The tremor was centered about 76 miles northeast of Santa Isabel and 113 miles west of Hermosilla, and U.S. media reported shaking was felt as far away as Phoenix and downtown San Diego.
There was no immediate word of any damage or injuries in Mexico.
The Arizona Republic reported its newsroom shook slightly during the temblor.
KNSD-TV, San Diego, said City Hall was briefly evacuated and fire engines were moved out of their stations, which is standard procedure in the event of a sizable earthquake.
