More Layoffs at General Motors

/ Source: WKBW-TV

General Motors will have to layoff about 7,500 hourly U.S. workers before the end of the year if the struggling automaker wants to meet its goal of reducing its workforce.

6,000 workers have voluntarily accepted GM's most recent buyout and early retirement packages. GM said it will not offer another buyout and is planning on reducing its ranks to 10,500 hourly U.S. workers by December 31.

At the GM Powertrain facility in Tonawanda, 141 workers are leaving under the early retirement and buyout plans. Those positions will be filled by a quarter of the 400 employees on permanent layoff.

Plant manager Steve Finch said that while there are many short-term hurdles for the facility to overcome, things look good in the long-term.
