WI Ranks 12th In Country For Volunteerism

Governor Jim Doyle announced Monday that even during a time of prolonged economic recession, Wisconsin residents continue to volunteer in their communities at high rates, according to a report recently released by the Corporation for National and Community Service.

Governor Jim Doyle announced Monday that even during a time of prolonged economic recession, Wisconsin residents continue to volunteer in their communities at high rates, according to a report recently released by the Corporation for National and Community Service.

“Wisconsin has a strong tradition of neighbors helping neighbors and volunteering to support each other’s needs,” Governor Doyle said. “I am not surprised at the results of the latest volunteerism survey and I am proud that Wisconsin has continued its high national volunteer ranking. This last year has been a challenging time with economic hardships but volunteering in Wisconsin has continued to thrive as the needs of the people have increased in our communities.”

According to “Volunteering in America 2009”, the most comprehensive data ever assembled on volunteer trends and demographics, volunteering in America remained steady, fueled by an increase in activity by young adults and neighbors working together to help each other.

Wisconsin’s 2008 volunteer rate increased to 26.4 percent, ranking 12th in the country.

Wisconsin residents dedicated more than 142 hours of service in 2008, worth an estimated $2.8 billion. Other highlights include:

Wisconsin college students ranked third compared to other college students at 37.8 percent.

·Wisconsin young adults ranked 10th in the country at 28.4 percent.

·Older Adults in Wisconsin volunteered at a rate of 32.1% ranking 10th in the Country.

·The Volunteer Retention Rate for Wisconsin was 70.1% ranking 11th in the Country.
