The California State Fair is set to get rolling on Aug. 21.

But one big problem for Big Fun has been low weekday attendance. Schools in the Sacramento area are starting earlier now -- in August.

"I'd like to see us be our normal 30 to 35,000 on a good weekday, that we've seen drop to about 19 to 26,000," State Fair general manager Norb Bartosik said.

If weekday attendance is low this year there's a good possibility the fair would switch to July 9 through 25 in 2010, between the Alameda and Sonoma County fairs.

Horse racing dates would also have to be moved.

"It's no secret that it's quiet around here on weekdays until about 4 to 4:30 p.m. and we used to be the last fair of the season, we're not any longer, so we're looking at what might be the best schedule," Bartosik said.

A decision on the schedule will come at a board meeting next month after reviewing this year's attendance.

The quirky food item on this year's State Fair menu is the zucchini weenie -- a hot dog inside some zucchini.
