WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Senate has confirmed a Minnesota college professor to be President Obama's ambassador to the Vatican.
Miguel Diaz is a professor of theology at the College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph and St. John's University in Collegeville. The 45-year-old native of Cuba is the first Hispanic to serve as U.S. ambassador to the Vatican.
The married father of four says he is honored by the responsibility and plans to move his family to Rome at the earliest opportunity.
The Senate confirmed another Minnesotan to an ambassadorship on Tuesday night. Minneapolis lawyer and Democratic fundraiser Sam Kaplan was confirmed to be the U.S. ambassador to Morocco.
