NATO's top official says he wants greater cooperation between the alliance and Russia in Afghanistan and on missile defense.

Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen says he wants NATO and Russia to launch a review of their common 21st-century security challenges, and that he will discuss that with Russian leaders on a trip there in the coming weeks.

He says he hopes for a stronger Russian engagement in Afghanistan and also wants Russia brought into NATO's missile defense plans, a step he says was made easier with President Barack Obama's announcement last month to reconfigure a Bush-era missile defense project.

Fogh Rasmussen spoke Thursday at a security conference in Bratislava ahead of a meeting NATO defense ministers.
