The old phrase "loose lips sink ships" might also apply to an alleged phone thief.
The Boone County Sheriff's Office said Deputy Nick Cook stopped to check on a stranded motorist at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday on northbound I-75 near Walton. The motorist was changing a flat tire with the assistance of another man.
After changing the tire the man who had been providing aid left. Cook said that the driver quickly realized his phone that he had placed on the tailgate was missing. Neither Cook nor the driver had any idea who the Good Samaritan was.
But Cook remembered a conversation he had with the man where he said his father had instructed a Boone County Sheriff's detective in martial arts.
The sheriff's office said Cook called the detective, got the instructor's name and address, then found the suspect, Thomas Webster Jr., 25 at the home.
Webster was arrested and charged with receiving stolen property after surrendering the stolen phone, Cook said.
