Negro League Appreciation Night in Frederick

/ Source: WHAG-TV

FREDERICK, MD - The Frederick Keys weren't the only group of ballplayers at Harry Grove Stadium this evening.

Players from Negro League Baseball teamed with members of the NAACP for a night of appreciation.

Four former players even took turns throwing out the ceremonial first pitch.

Current Minor Leaguers played the game wearing the "throwback" Negro League uniforms. For some players, the evening was about more than just about baseball

"I thought i knew all there was about playing baseball until i got around these really great players, but it also taught me how to be a man, it taught me responsibility, it taught me how it taught me respect. So the game was more than just playing for me it was learning how to grow up and be a responsible person, " said Eddie Banks, of the Newark Eagles.

The NAACP and Negro League Baseball started in Frederick in the early 1930's. Organizers hope to make this an annual event. Read more atyour4state.com.
