Peru has granted asylum to a Venezuelan activist charged by President Hugo Chavez's government with inciting violence during a protest.

Foreign Minister Jose Antonio Garcia Belaunde says Oscar Perez received asylum on Monday.

Perez came to Peru in September after a Venezuelan court ordered his arrest on charges of conspiring to commit and instigate crimes during an August political demonstration. Perez led a protest against a new education law that critics said could lead to indoctrination in schools.

He frequently helped organize street protests against Chavez's government and calls the charges political persecution.

Peru's conservative government has granted asylum to several opposition figures from its leftist neighbors.
