A moderate earthquake has shaken densely populated towns in the eastern Dominican Republic, but no injuries or damage have been reported.

The U.S. Geological Survey says that the 4.6 magnitude quake struck shortly before midnight a few miles between San Pedro de Macoris and Hato Mayor. The area is east of Santo Domingo, the capital city of 2.2 million inhabitants.

The country is located near the intersection of the Caribbean and North American tectonic plates and smaller faults run under the island, which is shared by the Dominican Republic and Haiti.
