A lawyer for two jailed opposition bloggers in Azerbaijan says an additional charge has been filed against his clients.
Adnan Hadzhizade and Emin Milli are being held pending trial on hooliganism charges after what authorities said was a fight with several other men in a restaurant in the ex-Soviet republic's capital in early July. Lawyer Isakhan Ashurov said Monday that prosecutors added a charge of deliberately inflicting bodily harm.
The U.S., Germany and others have voiced concern about the bloggers' detention. President Ilham Aliyev has faced criticism over the heavy-handed treatment of independent media and opposition parties in Azerbaijan.
Hooliganism carries a maximum sentence of five years, and the new charge up to two years.
