FORT WAYNE, IN (Indiana's NewsCenter) --- A section of Harrison Street will have to be closed for a short time Tuesday, to allow for some heavy duty lifting on to the roof of an historic downtown building.

The work is being done at a building across the street from Harrison Square, and it does have some connection to that major downtown development.

A crane will be blocking Harrison starting Tuesday morning for a few hours, so scaffolding, bricks and some other materials can be lifted to the roof of the old Indiana Hotel next to the Embassy Theater.

When the Harrison Square hotel, a stone's throw to the west, is substantially complete, a pedestrian skybridge will connect the two hotels.

The upper floors of the Indiana Hotel have been abandoned for years, but once the skybridge opens, the old hotel figures to become a much busier place, so an empty shaft on the westside of the building is being turned into a working elevator.

Kelly Updike/Embassy Theater Executive Director: " It will be installed as part of the project to allow us complete access basement to 7th floor. They'll have to lift materials up to that elevator shaft and through it to get things in. We're very landlocked in the Embassy. It's a very urban building and so they have to be really creative about how they're getting things in and out of the building."

The skybridge could bring back the glory days to the old hotel.

Embassy officials hope shops, restaurants, and meeting rooms are all possible on the upper floors, once foot traffic picks up from the adjacent Courtyard by Marriott Hotel at Harrison Square.
