Former Venezuelan president Jaime Lusinchi has been hospitalized due to a gastric ulcer.

Lusinchi's wife Blanca Ibanez says her husband was sent to a hospital in Miami on Sunday after he collapsed at the couple's home in a Miami suburb.

Venezuela's state-run Bolivarian News Agency quoted Ibanez on Monday as saying Lusinchi would soon undergo surgery.

Lusinchi served as president from 1984 to 1989 as a member of the center-left Democratic Action party.

His term was characterized by an economic crisis amid unstable prices for oil — Venezuela's main export.

Lusinchi was born on May 27, 1924.
