The U.S. Tennis Association has designated the Green Spring Racquet Club in Baltimore County an official competitive training center.

The USTA named Green Spring Racquet Club as Outstanding Facility of the Year for 2009. The facility has only been open for a year and a half.

Tennis Director Joey Atas was picked to lead the operation. He said serious tennis players ages 3 to 18 throughout the Mid-Atlantic can go to the center to develop the skills and mentality it takes to get to the next level.

"Our energetic staff is so excited that our hard work is being recognized by the USTA," club General Manager Janet Paulsen said in a statement. "We strive to improve our programming that will benefit our members and introduce new players to the wonderful game of tennis."

Green Spring is currently one of two competitive training facilities in Maryland.

The club has a new cardio tennis aerobic workout, and for little ones ages 5 to 10, there's a new QuickStart program that gets children interested in the sport.
