Students at George Washington University are being warned today about a spike in violent crime in the neighborhood after a woman's purse was snatched off her shoulder at 21st and L Streets, NW, this weekend

The purse snatching incident caps more than a dozen robberies in the area since May. Although none of the incidents have taken place on campus, some of them have involved GWU students, police said.

The robberies have also included large groups of people attacking a lone victim in the streets, according to officials.

DC Councilman Jack Evans (D-Ward 2) told NBCWashington that he's spoken with police, who said they are going to step up patrols and add more undercover security officers to the neighborhood.

In the meantime, police are reminding students to always travel in pairs or groups, especially at night.
