Passenger and freight trains that use tracks through High Point will be increasing their speed after Norfolk Southern completed a track improvement project.

Starting Tuesday, Amtrak trains will increase in speed to 60 mph and then to a maximum speed of 79 mph on Sept. 8.

Freight train speeds will increase to 50 mph.

The train speed limit through the area had been 40 mph.

Norfolk Southern added a second set of tracks that will allow for the faster speeds, High Point transportation director Mark McDonald said.

Motorist and pedestrians around the Hoskins Street crossing were urged to use additional caution when crossing the tracks.
