CAIRO (AP) - An Iranian medical examiner has reportedly found
that a prisoner died from beatings and poor conditions in the
nation’s post-election chaos.
Semiofficial news agency Mehr reports that the son of a
prominent conservative politician’s adviser died of “physical
stress, the effects of being held in bad conditions, multiple blows
and severe injuries to the body.“
He was detained during a July protest and taken to a hospital
two weeks later where he died within hours. Police initially
suggested his death was caused by meningitis.
The report by the conservative-allied news organization suggests
conservatives will seek to prosecute those responsible for prison
abuse in an attempt to defuse anger over torture allegations.
Iran’s new judiciary chief recently appointed a team to
supervise an investigation into the post-election unrest, including
the alleged abuse of detained protesters.
