SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. - Authorities say a man carrying a bag of beer was struck and killed by a coal train in Spokane Valley. Gus Melonas of Burlington Northern Santa Fe says the train hit the man about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday at about 35 mph. He adds that the train was en route to Centralia from the Powder River basin in Montana. Crew members believe the 38-year-old man was trying to beat the train west of the North Park Road crossing. They threw the emergency brake, but it was too late.
