South Carolina Republican Party leaders have voted to ask Gov. Mark Sanford to resign.

State GOP media adviser Joel Sawyer says 31 out of the 46 executive committee members agreed Thursday evening to send a letter to the Republican governor asking for his resignation.

The party executive committee voted in July to censure Sanford after he admitted to a yearlong affair. Since then, several Associated Press investigations have called into question his use of commercial, state and private planes.

Sanford spokesman Ben Fox reiterated the governor's contention that residents want to move past the affair and get back to business.

The party's vote follows calls for Sanford's resignation from 61 of 72 GOP state representatives Wednesday.
