Officials said between 8 to 10 million gallons of raw sewage were dumped into the Ohio River after a gate was lowered during maintenance procedures Wednesday afternoon.

Bud Schardein with Metropolitan Sewer Division said he was not sure if any fines would be levied against the agency.

The Environmental Protection Agency is conducting its own investigation into the incident.

Schardein said if MSD was to be fined, the money would come from a general fund.

Schardein said that the system is not outdated, and the incident occurred during routine preventive maintenance.
