It's a tragic start to the Thanksgiving holiday after three middle school students were hit by a car while they walked home from school.

One child is dead, another is fighting for his life and a third is recovering.

The accident occurred around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Hampden and Marshall Roads in Upper Darby, Pa., police said.

The three kids were walking home from Beverly Hills Middle School when a car veered off Marshall Road and into the students, police said. They had been dismissed early for the holiday break.

The driver, a 42-year old woman, then attempted to flee the scene, but was nabbed after hitting a parked car, police said.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident, but Upper Darby Police Supt. Michael Chitwood said speed was a factor.
