“Utah was the one place I could do Indiana Jones.”

That is why Rich Briggs moved to the “Beehive State” in 1999.

Briggs, a resident of Riverton, Utah, submitted the top-rated image in this week’s It’s A Snap! travel photo contest. Briggs captured the shot on one of his several visits to Canyonlands National Park this summer.

“I’ve been to a lot of places — Tahiti a couple times, Ayers Rock, Fiji …,” Briggs said, “but the area around Canyonlands has more aura than any of those places.”

Briggs has only been serious about photography since May. After hurting his shoulder rock climbing, “I needed something to keep me outside,” he said.

He’s been to Grand Canyon, Yellowstone and a number of other national parks in the Four Corners area.

“I think Canyonlands is more scenic than the Grand Canyon, but not as many people see it.”

Next up for the outdoor enthusiast is yet another trip to Moab. (Briggs estimates he’s been there seven times so far this year, but admits he has lost exact count.)

“My purpose for living in Utah is being able to go to Moab.”
