KGW-TV reports that an unruly passenger forced a Maui-bound Hawaiian Airlines plane to return to the Portland International Airport.

KGW's Web site reports that officials with the Portland Air National Guard Base said at 1 p.m., two fighter jets escorted the plane.

Hawaiian Airlines said the situation was not security related.

Flight 39 was 1.5 hours into its direct flight when the captain turned the plane around, citing issues with a suspicious passenger, who allegedly made threatening remarks and refused to store his carry-on bag.

The passengers deplaned and reboarded and the flight was scheduled to take off back to Maui.

The plane landed without further incident.

Police and the TSA are interviewing the passenger in question.
