A 75-year-old woman trying to rescue a cat stuck on a highway's median was hit by a car and killed, police say.
State police say Cynthia Long, of Putney, stopped on the shoulder of Interstate 91 near Dummerston on Sunday to try to help the cat.
Long was hit just after 4 p.m. while walking across the passing lane.
"She was an animal lover, apparently, and had a number of cats and dogs, according to her family," the Brattleboro Reformer newspaper quoted State Trooper Kurt Wagenbach as saying.
"She was trying to do something out of the goodness of her heart, and it had tragic consequences," Wagenbach added.
Police said the crash remains under investigation.
Wagenbach said police do not believe speed or alcohol were factors in the collision.
"It was sunset; there was a solar glare," he said.
There is also a curve in the roadway in that portion of southbound Interstate 91, Wagenbach said.
The animal was not seen by police, the Reformer quoted State Police Sgt. Christopher Buckley as saying, though police did receive calls regarding a cat in the area prior to the accident.
