A Russian spacecraft lifted off on Wednesday with supplies for the International Space Station and its crew.

The Progress M-05M shed its rocket stages and entered orbit after blasting off on schedule from the Russian-leased Baikonur launch facility in Kazakhstan, a representative of Russian Mission Control outside Moscow said by telephone.

The spaceship was carrying nearly 2.6 metric tons of cargo — including fuel and equipment for the station and food, water and care packages for its crew of three Russians, two Americans and a Japanese astronaut.

The cargo vessel is scheduled to dock at the orbital station on Saturday.
