A policeman was killed and up to seven people were injured when a suicide bomber blew himself up near a police base in Russia's restive republic of Dagestan, Interfax news agency reported Saturday.
Interfax, citing a local security source, said the attacker drove in a van to a police camp in the Dagestani town of Khasavyurt. He was not able to enter the base, the entrance to which was blocked by a truck, and blew himself up outside it.
The incident occurred a few days after rebels staged a suicide attack on neighboring Chechnya's parliament.
Dagestan, the easternmost province in Russia's turbulent North Caucasus, is home to dozens of ethnic groups.
The mostly Muslim province on the Caspian Sea has become a major focus of an Islamist insurgency rooted in the separatist wars that devastated Chechnya in the 1990s.
