A United Airlines jet was diverted to Montreal Tuesday after six people on board were injured by severe turbulence over the Atlantic, airport and airline officials said.

Six passengers were injured — including one who suffered a severe bone fracture, and a pregnant woman.

Five ambulances rushed to the plane as it touched down in Montreal, just after noon local time.

The local ambulance service says the operation went smoothly. The jet had been en route to Los Angeles from London's Heathrow airport.

According to United's website, the flight operates using a Boeing 777 airliner.  United was flying a replacement plane in from Chicago and the rest of the passengers were expected to continue their journey to LAX Tuesday afternoon, NBC News reported.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada sent an investigator to meet the United flight. NBC News reported they were going to take possession of the planes Flight Data and Cockpit Voice recorders and send them to their lab in Ottawa for further analysis.
