A school bus returning from a church camp overturned Saturday on Interstate 35 near Wellsville, injuring nine children, authorities said.
Eight of the injured were taken to the hospital by ambulance; a ninth child was transported by medical helicopter, Trooper Neil Stanley of the Kansas Highway Patrol told NBC News.
Stanley said none of the injuries was life-threatening. Earlier reports said one child was airlifted in critical condition.
The children were between 10 and 15 years old.
The bus was carrying 29 people, 23 of them children, authorities said.
An official at Tri-City Ministries in Independence said the children were part of an outreach ministry and were attending Amazing Grace Baptist Camp in rural Franklin County.
The bus drifted off the roadway. The driver tried to get back on the road but overcorrected, and the bus overturned onto its side, Stanley told NBC.
Troopers closed the highway for about two hours, backing up traffic for miles. The highway reopened around noon.
The Kansas Highway Patrol was investigating the cause of the accident.
