Roe V. Wade Decision Handed Down 34 Years Ago

The U.S. Supreme Court handed down its decision on one of the nation's most divisive issues 34 years ago on this date. The ruling in the Roe v. Wade case determined abortion to be a fundamental right under the Constitution. The decision stated that the "right of privacy" encompasses a woman's decision on whether or not to terminate her pregnancy. Since the controversial ruling in 1974, organizations for and against the Supreme Court decision have intensified their stance and increased their presence on Capitol Hill. The pro-choice organization NARAL held its sixth annual Blog for Choice Day On January 21st. The event allowed for Internet discussions and comments on reproductive rights. It also pressed the message that the right to choose is a progressive value that must be protected. Ardent supporters of turning back the decision are holding their annual Right to Life March on Monday in Washington, DC. Since the event was first held in 1974, the number of participants has grown from 20-thousand to over 200-thousand marchers. Backers of overturning Roe v. Wade are also bolstered even more in their cause following the installation of the newly-elected GOP House majority. Pro-choice supporters are particularly targeting House Majority Leader John Boehner. The Ohio lawmaker has cast numerous anti-abortion votes and has made clear he stands firmly with pro-life backers on the abortion issue.
