A man who allegedly took a woman hostage during a Friday bank robbery in suburban Washington, D.C., has been killed, authorities said.

A Maryland police official said the suspect had something that looked like a bomb taped to him during the incident Friday morning. It ended up being plastic foam. Police say the suspect was holding a gun to the hostage's head.

Officials said at least two civilians were injured, as well as a police officer. The injuries were not life-threatening.

Video from NBC station WRC-TV shows dramatic and tense moments after the alleged thief emerged from a Capital One Bank on University Boulevard East in Takoma Park, Md., about 9:30 a.m. ET Friday.

The video shows a man slowly walking out of the bank toward police officers using a woman as a shield. As police surrounded the hostage and the suspect, a dye pack appeared to explode, leaving a red cloud trailing behind the pair.

There was a brief struggle between the alleged robber and the hostage, and the woman started to run. The suspect chased after her, but appeared to slip on ice and was shot by police.

The female hostage was not harmed, Takoma Park police said.
