According to comScore, Inc., a global leader in measuring the digital world and preferred source of digital business analytics, in data released February 7, 2011 from their MobiLens service, "63.2 million people in the U.S. owned smartphones during the three months ending in December 2010, up 60 percent versus year ago."
Additionally the mobile application marketplace will reach $25 billion by 2015, according to a new report by World Mobile Applications Market, a U.S.-based market research firm.
The firm also found that global applications was one of the few industries not affected by the recent economic downturn. In 2008, mobile apps saw a 146% growth in terms of downloads, going from 450 million downloads in 2007 to 1 billion in 2008, the firm said. In 2009 the market saw 6.4 billion downloads.
