A military spokesman in Tanzania's capital says ammunitions stored at a military base in the capital has been exploding, and that injuries and deaths are possible as a result of blasts.
Loud booms could be heard and bright orange blasts seen across Dar Es Salaam after nightfall Wednesday.
Lt. Col. Kapambala Mgawe, a spokesman for Tanzania's military, said the explosions were triggered by accident and were popping off in different directions.
He would not be able to confirm any casualty figures until Thursday.
Mgawe said the road to the Gongola Mboto military base, near the capital's airport, has been closed because of the explosions.
Explosions at the base's ammunition depot in spring 2009 killed more than a dozen people.
