MONTERREY, Mexico, April 8, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Mexican airport operator Grupo Aeroportuario del Centro Norte, S.A.B. de C.V., known as OMA (Nasdaq:OMAB) (BMV:OMA), reports that terminal passenger traffic at its 13 airports decreased 7.2% in March 2011, as compared to March 2010. Domestic traffic decreased 4.7%, and international traffic decreased 16.5%.
The Easter holiday travel period occurred in March 2010 and will take place in April this year, affecting comparisons of March 2011 with March 2010.
Of total March traffic, 96.8% was commercial aviation, and 3.2% was general aviation.
Domestic traffic increased in four airports in March, with the most noteworthy increases in Torreón and Tampico. In Torreón, traffic increased principally on the route to Mexico City; in Tampico, traffic increased principally on the Monterrey route. During March, VivaAerobus opened four new routes between our airports in Ciudad Juárez, Culiacán, Tampico, and Torreón and Mexico City. Traffic decreased most at the airports in Chihuahua, Culiacán, Ciudad Juárez, and Acapulco. The reduction in Chihuahua was principally on the Toluca and Guadalajara routes. The suspension of the airlines of Grupo Mexicana continues to affect traffic at Culiacán and Acapulco. In Ciudad Juárez and Culiacán, the reduction in traffic was principally on their Monterrey routes.
International traffic decreased most significantly in Acapulco, Mazatlán, and Zacatecas. Mazatlán and Zacatecas continue to be affected by the Grupo Mexicana suspension. Acapulco traffic was also affected by a reduction in passengers on the Houston and Dallas routes, while Mazatlán had lower traffic on the Phoenix, Minneapolis, and Regina, Saskatchewan routes.
The total number of flight operations (takeoffs and landings) in January decreased 6.5% as compared to the prior year period. Domestic flights decreased 7.6%, and international flights increased 0.9%.
