Microsemi EEPoE(TM) ICs Enable More Energy-Efficient Network Devices

/ Source: GlobeNewswire

IRVINE, Calif., May 9, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Microsemi Corporation(Nasdaq:MSCC), a leading provider of semiconductor technology aimed at powering a smart, secure, connected world, today announced a family of highly integrated Power over Ethernet (PoE) ICs for developing more energy-efficient IP phones and cameras, WLAN access points and other powered devices (PDs).

Microsemi's PD70x0x family of Energy-Efficient PoE (EEPoE™) front-end PD ICs enables PDs to receive up to 51 watts of power over all four pairs of the same standard Ethernet network cabling that is used to carry data.

"We have leveraged our PoE experience plus our long heritage in power electronics to create highly integrated PD solutions that support the full range of PD powering requirements," said Paul Pickle, Senior Vice President of Microsemi's Integrated Circuit Group. "These solutions enable the same energy-efficient four-pair powering that has been proven in our solutions for Power Sourcing Equipment, and reduce the size, cost and complexity of next-generation energy-efficient PDs."

Key Features and Benefits

-      Improved power efficiency for network PDs.

  • Support for four-pair powering in a single IC with built-in PWM controller, enabling PDs to receive a full 51 watts of power while reducing cable losses by over 50 percent.
  • 25Kohm input signature resistor disconnection, eliminating up to 0.13W of constant power dissipation.
  • 0.6ohm worst-case isolating switch, reducing power dissipation up to 40 percent compared to alternative solutions.
  • Low Power Mode, reducing standby power losses by 80 percent.

-      Exclusive Port Fail Warning indication, which allows customers to perform an orderly PD shutdown in case power from the PSE is lost.

Microsemi's PD70x0x EEPoE™ front-end PD ICs join the company's family of two- and four-pair, standard- and high-power PoE solutions, including midspans and Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) ICs and splitters.

Family Details, Pricing and Availability

Microsemi offers four PD70x0x versions including Type 1 and Type 2 solutions, as well as devices that feature integrated pulse width modulation (PWM) controllers to simplify design while reducing PD size and cost. Each device is sampling now and will enter volume production in the third quarter of 2011. Family members include:

  • PD70100: IEEE802.3at-2009 Type 1 PD front-end device, housed in a dual flat no-lead (DFN) 12-pin 4x3mm package.
  • PD70101: IEEE802.3at-2009 Type 1 PD front-end device with integrated 100-500KHz PWM Controller, housed in a quad flat no-lead (QFN) 32-pin 5x5mm package.
  • PD70200: IEEE802.3at-2009 Type 2 PD front-end device, housed in a DFN 12 pin 4x3mm package.
  • PD70201: IEEE802.3at-2009 Type 2 PD front-end device with integrated 100-500KHz PWM Controller, housed in a QFN-32 pin 5x5mm package.

Pricing depends on device and volume, and ranges from $1.07 per unit for the PD70100 in OEM quantities of 5,000, to $1.81 per unit for the PD70201 in OEM quantities of 10,000. Evaluation boards are available from Microsemi to demonstrate the EEPoE PD70x0x devices' functionality.

About Power over Ethernet Technology

PoE is a technology for wired Ethernet, the most widely installed local area network technology in use today. PoE allows the electrical power necessary for the operation of each end-device to be carried by data cables, rather than by separate power cords. It minimizes the number of wires used to install the network, resulting in lower cost, less downtime, easier maintenance and greater installation flexibility. The technology was pioneered by PowerDsine, a founding member of the IEEE 802.3af and IEEE802.3at Task Forces. The company became part of Microsemi's Analog Mixed Signal Group after its acquisition in January 2007, and recently shipped the 100 millionth port for its line of PoE midspans and advanced controller components.
