COVINGTON, La., May 23, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Globalstar, Inc. (Nasdaq:GSAT), a leading provider of mobile satellite voice and data services to businesses, government, and individuals today announced the Company's response to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Julius Genachowski's recent speech to the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA).
Speaking at the TIA's 2011 Inside the Network summit in Dallas, TX Chairman Genachowski stated, "Clearly, the opportunities of mobile broadband are enormous. And clearly we must seize them. The rest of the world thinks so, and they are moving to free up spectrum and seize the opportunities of mobile. We can't afford to wait. Now, there's much we need to do, and are doing: Including giving greater flexibility to bands like Mobile Satellite Service (MSS) to permit terrestrial broadband use."
"We continue to be encouraged with the FCC's recognition that mobile satellite spectrum is suitable for delivering mobile broadband to consumers and helping meet the Commission's significant spectrum objectives outlined in the National Broadband Plan," said L. Barbee Ponder, General Counsel and VP of Regulatory Affairs, Globalstar, Inc. "As we continue to launch and deploy our second generation satellite constellation, we look forward to participating in existing and future MSS flexibility proceedings with the FCC that could lead to increased investment and utilization of the spectrum."
