TAMPA, Fla., May 26, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Shriners Hospitals for Children® is proud to announce that William Bria, M.D., corporate director for medical informatics, has been named by Modern Healthcare as one of the 50 Most Influential Physician Executives in Healthcare.

Dr. Bria is ranked 20th on the list, which is compiled yearly and voted on by subscribers to Modern Healthcare and its sister publication Modern Physician.

"This recognition brings great honor not only to Bill, but also to our organization for having someone of his caliber on our staff," said Peter Armstrong, M.D., vice president of medical affairs at Shriners Hospitals for Children.

More than 11,700 nominations were received and the 100 names receiving the most nominations were then placed on the final ballot. From Jan. 17 through Feb. 22, 2011, readers could submit their votes for the candidates they believed should make the final ranking. Nearly 152,000 votes were cast.

Readers' votes counted for only 50 percent of the outcome. The other 50 percent came from the expert opinions of the senior editors at Modern Physician and Modern Healthcare.

Dr. Bria has been a leader in applied medical informatics, a concept he explains as "applying IT to the medical profession, or using information tools to improve safety, quality and consistency of patient care," for more than 25 years. He is currently president of the Association of Medical Directors of Information Systems, a Fellow in the American College of Chest Physicians, an advisor to the National Center for Research Resources and founder and past chair of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society Physicians Community.
