QLogic Wins Major Deployment in NNSA's Tri-Labs Cluster

/ Source: GlobeNewswire

ALISO VIEJO, Calif., June 17, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Leveraging the superior message rate performance and scalable latency of its TrueScale® InfiniBand architecture, QLogic (Nasdaq:QLGC) has been selected to provide its 12000 Series switches and 7300 Series adapters in a massive supercomputer deployment for the Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration's (NNSA's) Tri-Laboratory Linux Capacity Cluster 2 (TLCC2). The clusters will be deployed over the next two years at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), Sandia National Laboratories, and Los Alamos National Laboratory, and encompasses as many as 20,000 nodes. Appro, the system integrator in the agreement, is providing its Xtreme-X™ supercomputer hardware along with QLogic® Quad Data Rate (QDR) InfiniBand solutions.

Under the TLCC2 contract , the NNSA is making a strategic investment in supercomputing resources to keep up with the heavy demands for capacity computing in support of NNSA's stockpile stewardship program, the effort to ensure the safety, security and reliability of the nation's nuclear deterrent without testing. The selection of Appro and QLogic was the result of a highly competitive evaluation and benchmarking process that involved all major InfiniBand interconnect vendors. This award follows QLogic's successful deployment of more than 4,000 nodes connected with TrueScale InfiniBand at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory in late 2010. In this deployment, the TrueScale architecture has proven itself to be one of the most scalable interconnects ever deployed by the DOE/NNSA.

"These computing clusters will provide needed computing capacity for NNSA's day-to-day work managing the nation's nuclear deterrent," said Don Cook, NNSA's Deputy Administrator for Defense Programs. "This Tri-Lab effort will help reduce costs, increase operational efficiencies, and facilitate collaborations that benefit our nation's security, support academia, and promote American competitiveness."

"This is a major, multi-million dollar win for our Xtreme-X™ Supercomputer reinforcing Appro's leadership position in the High Performance Computing market," said Daniel Kim, CEO at Appro. "We rely on QLogic to deliver improved InfiniBand interconnect performance for our Xtreme-X systems so we can continue to push the boundaries of new research for breakthrough technologies that will strengthen our national security."

"This major deployment proves that there are fundamental advantages to QLogic's TrueScale InfiniBand architecture that give it greater performance and scalability than other offerings," said Jesse Parker, vice president and general manager, network solutions group, QLogic. "Our architecture is the only InfiniBand offering on the market that is fully and specifically optimized for demanding, large-scale HPC environments like those at the Tri-Labs."
