A man is suspected of fatally stabbing his wife and four children before setting his home on fire, Medford police said Monday.
Fire crews responding to a house fire Monday morning pulled six people from the smoke-filled residence. A 30-year-old woman, Tabasha Paige-Criado, and four children — three boys ages 7, 6 and 5 and a 2-year-old girl — were taken to a hospital and died of stab wounds and smoke inhalation, KTVL-TV reported.
The woman's husband, Jordan Adam Criado, 51, also suffered smoke inhalation but was expected to survive. He was in police custody in stable condition at a local hospital.
Police believe he stabbed his family before setting fire to the home, the Medford Mail Tribune reported, citing police officials.
The case was being investigated as an arson and homicide. Police were waiting for a judge's approval of a search warrant to go inside the residence.
A motive was unclear.
