Health officials in Rowan County, Ky., are dealing with a bizarre situation after dozens of people became ill after a clogging championship on Saturday.

Dozens of people came home from the Bluegrass State Clogging Championships with an upset stomach. Health officials believe they caught some sort of bug. Hundreds of dancers from Winchester and Owingsville, as well as dancers from other states other than Kentucky, crowded the Morehead Conference Center.

"With any competition, they're holding hands," said Joy Brown, the manager of the Morehead Conference Center. "A lot of contact went on."

Health officials say they shared more than team spirit. "We've determined there's a common link from among 900 people that showed up for this event on Saturday with a common illness, gastritis," said Gateway District Health Department Director James Ratliff.

Dozens of cloggers and their families got sick with upset stomach, vomiting, and diarrhea. "Right now, we are leaning towards something brought in," said Ratliff.

"There were a couple parents who called in they said several groups that were there had already been sick the week before," said Brown.

Now, health officials are worried about the bug getting passed along. "It's the last thing we want," said Ratliff.

The president of Clogging Champions of America said they aren't blaming the conference center for the dancers getting sick, and they plan to hold the event there again next year.
