TODAY.com has been honored with a Best in Business award from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers (SABEW) for its 2011 “We are the Median” special coverage. The annual Best in Business competition honors excellence in business and financial journalism across all news platforms. TODAY.com will be recognized at the 17th annual Best in Business journalism awards held March 17 in Indianapolis.
“We are the Median” explored varied experiences of people living on the nation’s median household income of $50,000 a year. The series began when Life Inc., the TODAY Money blog, asked its readers to share their stories, generating an overwhelming response. A reporting team fanned out to several parts of the country in December to meet these ordinary Americans and see how they were faring. The series profiled a different household each day and discovered that for some, $50,000 a year was plenty, but many others were struggling to get by. The multimedia series included videos, photos, text, online chats and polls as well as postings to Facebook, Twitter (#median) and Google Plus.
“We’re excited to be recognized with one of the top honors in business journalism, especially since this year’s SABEW contest was tougher than ever with a record of more than 1,000 entries,” said Martin Wolk executive business editor for TODAY.com and msnbc.com. “When we received hundreds of responses from readers about the series, we knew ‘We are the median’ struck a chord. The project allowed us to connect with readers on multiple platforms and let them share their stories in their own words, which was why it was such a success.”
The SABEW Best in Business winners are lead writer Allison Linn, lead multimedia producer Jim Seida, and multimedia producers John Makely and John Brecher.
