A man who died in an early morning fire Wednesday was trying to get his roommates out of the burning house.

Joe Sullivan, who lives in the house on the 3500 block of Harriet Avenue South, spent Tuesday night in St. Paul but returned home Wednesday to hear what happened.

"He was the first one to be aware of the fire and he woke everyone up and he was in the process of getting everyone out of the house when he probably succumbed to the smoke," Sullivan told KARE 11.

The 25-year-old man who died was found on the second floor by Minneapolis firefighters.

Sullivan described his roommate as an actor, musician and teacher who moved to Minneapolis just a few years ago.

"He died trying to save everyone's lives," Sullivan said. "And I'm grateful everyone else is ok."

Minneapolis fire officials say the fire started just after 6 a.m.

A female resident was found on the third floor and had to be rescued by firefighters. She was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center.

Two other residents were able to escape unharmed.

The fire is under investigation.
