Abbott Laboratories Inc. on Wednesday said the U.S. Department of Agriculture has approved its test for the malformed proteins, called prions, believed to cause mad cow disease.

The suburban Chicago-based company said its Enfer BSE product is already widely used for mandatory testing of cattle brain specimens in Europe and Japan to ensure that they are free of the disease formally known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy.
