LAS VEGAS Jan. 8 — For the first time, music fans will have the chance to collaborate with Swedish DJ Avicii who headlines music festivals around the world. In partnership with telecommunications provider Ericsson, the project will open online Jan. 9 with a structured creation program from Tim Bergling, also known as Avicii.
"You don't have to be signed with a big label to be heard," Ash, Avicii's manager and partner, said at a press conference held on the posh upper tier of Ericsson's booth at the Consumer Electronics Show. Bergling's fan base grew from nothing to tens of millions through social media alone. The Avicii x You project is open to trained musicians and shower singers alike, Ash said.
Participants start by downloading Avicii's chord progression and then upload their own sound files. Each week a different part of the song will be created, including the bassline, drum loop, a dance-style break and effects. A new element will be ready every week, Ash said. Avicii will curate the contributions, which will result in the first crowdsourced hit song. Universal will distribute the song when it is released in late February.
True to Avicii's social media roots, the site will include a voting mechanism, so all fans whether they've contributed music files or just love to listen, will have a say in determining the strongest melody, bassline and other parts of the track. A map will be included on www.aviciixyou.com showing each contributor's location.
"We hope to raise the awareness for the electronic dance music scene," Ash said. "And show song producing is not exclusive to trained musicians."
