The former congressman has surged ahead of his opponent for the first time in the New York City mayoral race.
Democratic mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner is mid-step in his political comeback and now leads former longtime front-runner Council Speaker Christine Quinn in the latest poll by five points..
The NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll released Tuesday found Weiner leading with 25% of support from registered Democrats, compared to 20% for Quinn.
The surge for Weiner comes after a poll last month revealed Quinn leading the pack in a crowded candidate field and ahead of Weiner 24% to 19%.
The former congressman resigned in 2011 after confessing to sending a sexually suggestive tweet to a college-aged woman.
Earlier this year the New York Times Magazinereleased an interview with Weiner in which he discussed the mayoral race.
“I do want to have that conversation with people whom I let down and with people who put their faith in me and who wanted to support me,” he said in the interview. “I think to some degree I do want to say to them, ‘Give me another chance.’”
