Police Search for Attempted Kidnappers in the Poconos

Chestnuthill Township, Monroe County - Police are looking for two men who tried to kidnap two boys in the Poconos. The children were 7 and 8 years old.   The boys were riding their bikes on Shenkel Road in the Birches West community of Chestnuthill Township, Monroe County. It was around 7 p.m. Tuesday.   They say a gold SUV pulled up to them. There were two white men inside who appeared to be between the ages of 18 and 30.   The eight year old boy said one man talked to him. The child remembered, "He said to me, if I want money and to me friend if he wants some candy."   The boys said their parents taught them to run away from strangers, so that's exactly what they did. The eight year old said, "I was scared because I didn't want him to take me away."   His mother Jessie Johnson was relieved he got away. She said, "Of course I think the worst. There's a lot of child molesters and everything like that out here."   After the encounter with the SUV, the 8-year-old ran to his Grandmother Susan Engels house. He had been riding in front of her property. She said, "It's scary now. It's really scary to know that I'm up here 30 years and I've never had a problem like this."   Engel is concerned because a lot of children live in Birches West. Plus, friends and neighbors told her they have seen a gold SUV driving around slowly in other parts of Monroe County's West End. Johnson said, "It's sad. It's very scary, especially around here. I grew up here my whole life and played in this yard forever and it's never happened. It's getting really close to home and it's dangerous."   Now Jessie and Susan won't let the boy ride his new bike out front without an adult.   If you have any information on this case you should contact Trooper Tomlinson at the Fern Ridge Barracks of the Pennsylvania State Police. 570-646-2271.
