New York City mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner released his first Spanish-speaking political campaign video this week.
Weiner, in an attempt at courting New York City’s Latinos, talks about “el Futuro,” or the future, in the ad and insists that his campaign is not about his scandal-ridden past, but about the his potential as mayor.
Sounding just like El Bloombito, the parody account of current Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s attempts to speak Spanish, Weiner tells voters in the TV spot about his plans to cut taxes for the middle class, restore discipline in the city’s schools, and make housing more accessible.
Generic Latin music plays in the background of Weiner’s pitch as he shakes the hand of a constituent holding a soccer ball and mixes it up with spectators at the Dominican Day Parade.
The candidate fell to last place in the polls following more revelations that he had sent sexually explicit messages to young women after resigning from Congress, sometimes under the name “Carlos Danger.”
Latino mayoral candidate Rev. Erick Salgado called for Weiner to apologize to the Latino community for using the screen name, which Salgado said disparaged Hispanic New Yorkers.
“For Anthony Weiner to hide under a Spanish name to do his bad behavior is very insulting to the Spanish community,” Salgado said.
In an extensive interview on Univision, Weiner said of his decision to use a Spanish moniker that “it was a joke in my personal life between me and one person.”
